Kunawarritji Community Sports Facility

A remote project in Martu country, East Pilbara, Western Australia

Spantech was engaged to supply and install a Spantech Longreach 800 roof and feature side walls for a covered sports facility in the remote community of Kunawarritji.

Kunawarritji is an Aboriginal community located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, within the Shire of East Pilbara on the Canning Stock Route.

The sports facility includes large panels integrated into the side shade walls featuring the work of local Martu artists Bugai Whyoulter, Kumpaya Girgirba, Rosie Williams, Nora Wompi, Nora Ngangapa, and Dulcie Gibbs.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT AND FINANCE

The project was developed and managed by Metio in partnership with Rawa Community School.

Metio led the project facilitating community consultations, securing grant funding, coordinating the design team, tendering, and managing all contractors.

Many of the consultants including EIW Architects, ARUP, and Fourlandscape Studio and others provided Rawa Community School with pro bono design services.

The project was 100% grant funded, with support from:

  • Association of Independent Schools, WA through the Australian Government Capital Grants Program,

  • Lottery West, and

  • Department of Local Government, Sports and Cultural Industries, WA.
