Logan West Aquatic and Fitness Centre
Renovation of an existing aquatics facility
Spantech were engaged through City Venue Management to refurbish the Logan West Aquatic and Fitness Centre, a facility owned by the Logan City Council.
THE PROJECT
The existing structure and roof of the facility had deteriorated significantly. Most internal finishes were worn and needed replacing. Patronage had suffered as a result.
CVM recognised the potential in the centre and as part of their strategy to acquire management rights, they engaged Spantech to develop a comprehensive plan to upgrade the facility.
METHODOLOGY
SITE INVESTIGATION AND PLANNING
The existing roof was built using conventional construction, not resilient to a harsh aquatic environment. Purlins were rusting and metal was falling into the pools, roof cladding was rusting where lapped, column bases were rusted to a point where some were near collapse and operable louvres were rusted and no longer functioned for ventilation. In addition to the structural issues, much of the facility was in disrepair or inoperable and not compliant with current regulations.
COST EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS
It was found to be more cost efficient to replace the failing roofs with the Spantech 370 Series panel. All roofs over the pool hall and atrium had to be replaced, both flat and curved, to match existing profiles.
The new Spantech roof also offers much more resilience to the aquatic environment due to the requirement of less purlins and the fact the roof panel is more than twice as thick as conventional roof sheeting with no laps. The existing roof was removed and the new Spantech roof installed all in the space of three weeks. The failing steel columns were all collared with steel sheaths and coated to ensure their structural integrity. New ventilation was installed in the atrium roof to create air movement through the upper level to mitigate condensation.
RESULTS
All facilities, including the pools, concourse, amenities, childcare area, reception, gymnasium and group fitness area, along with all associated equipment, were completely refurbished to be fully compliant with current regulations and to be more aesthetically appealing to the public.
Spantech’s expertise and unique product has ensured the continued longevity of this once dilapidated facility which should now be operational for a period exceeding twice its original life expectancy.
