HMAS Stirling ECBs

Award winning Defence project constructed on an environmentally sensitive island

Spantech has successfully delivered explosive ordnance projects at HMAS Stirling spanning over a period of three decades over.

Spantech’s first project at HMAS Stirling was in 1996, where Spantech designed and constructed five Spantech 23m ECB.

SPANTECH’S ECB AT HMAS STIRLING ARE 7-BAR, TYPE 4 IGLOOS DESIGNED TO STORE UP TO 75,000KGS NEQ OF HD1.1

The project was awarded the 1997 Australian Defence Industry, Quality and Achievement Award in the Facilities and Property category. The award is recognition of the excellence in the design of the Spantech 23m ECB, and the company’s ability to construct this critical and complex defence infrastructure on an environmentally sensitive island. And significantly, to deliver the project on time and on budget.

EXCELLENCE IN CONSTRUCTION PROVEN OVER TIME

Few companies can achieve, and less can maintain the quality and high level of service demanded by the Australian Department of Defence.

Fifteen years later in 2011 Thales the EO Depot Manager contracted Spantech directly to upgrade the original five Spantech ECB.

The main feature added to the buildings was an array of internal racking designed specifically for the ordnance stored in the buildings. The racking is connected to the arch by a method that is strong enough to support the large loads and also allow the reinforced arch structure to flex in the unlikely event of an explosive event in an adjacent building. The racks are earthed to eliminate the risk of static electricity.

SIMULTANEOUSLY DELIVERING PROJECTS ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE CONTINENT

Spantech was contracted to add a further three Spantech 23m ECB to the Depot in 2017.

This contract was part of the AIR 9000 Phase 8 MH-60R Helicopter Facilities project.

For this project Spantech concurrently delivered Earth Covered Buildings to Defences bases on opposite sides of the country at HMAS Stirling, WA and Twofold Bay, NSW.
